Conventional wisdom called Millennials a kind of Peter Pan generation that would be unchanging in their unique approach to life. But a funny thing happened. In the past decade, Millennials matured to adulthood. While not necessarily tech-native, they had access to smartphones, e-commerce, and social media during much of their formative years. And thus, they became the largest (and most diverse) American demographic and a phenomenal source of purchasing power and influence (projected $200 billion in 2017). Armed with an infinite font of information, buying channels, and social media, this demographic ushered in an era of disintermediation. Add to it a high barometer for inauthenticity and an insatiable appetite for new experiences, and providers began to rethink their offerings.

Technology has created more wealth than any other time in history. Yet, the wealth is geographically and industry focused, and the chasm between those who possess the wealth and those who don’t is continuing to widen. By 2020, it is estimated that 1% of the world population will own 54% of the world’s wealth – most created and held by organizations and individuals in the technology sector, in Western countries.
There is a dramatic shift in the global robotics marketplace. The commonplace use of industrial robots will continue; however, the use of service robots—both personal and professional—will grow exponentially. Like organizations and the innovations they produce, the workforce has undergone significant change over the last 15 years. It shows every sign of continuing to evolve at this accelerated pace. Emerging developments are shifting stakeholder expectations, leaving industry leaders struggling to steer their organizations. Power is shifting from traditional executive positions to the workforce and customers with a proliferation of new ways to gather and disseminate information and collaborate on strategic tasks. As that shift happens, the gap between operations, workforce desires, customer expectations, and governing policies is widening.

During Toffler Associates training courses, we (like many other organizations) use a simple team-building exercise called The Marshmallow Challenge. Here’s how it works: the large group is broken down into teams of about five people. Each team must build the tallest free-standing structure possible out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow must end up on top. Each team has 18 minutes to get it done. The tallest structure wins.
